Climate action through agriculture and food systems

Climate change is one of the greatest threats to global food security, agricultural production and livelihoods. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and more frequent and intense extreme weather events, including droughts, floods, storms and pest outbreaks, are affecting agriculture and food systems, and the communities that depend on them around the world.

Yet agrifood systems are at the heart of climate solutions. Sustainable agriculture, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture can help countries adapt to a changing climate, strengthen resilience, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity and natural resources, and safeguard food production for present and future generations.

As the specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) works with countries and partners to scale up climate solutions across agrifood systems through adaptation and mitigation, climate finance, innovation, data, policy support and technical expertise. By making agrifood systems more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable, FAO helps countries strengthen food security, adapt to climate change, address losses and damages, reduce emissions and contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
